I. Rising mounds
II. Coarse grains
Listen to the third movement Reflections performed by the Villiers Quartet here:
This movement is an unusual swamp of textures. The title refers to the reflective character of the piece and the way in which the material is treated. Slow-moving, muddy textural ideas flow through a series of harmonically-ambiguous rhythmic distortions and stretched palindromes. It follows a repetitive, pulsating opening movement of layered rising sequences, and a second movement made up of pointillist textures, stark contrasts and binary oppositions. This movement is a moment of reflection with a hint of playfulness before the final movement’s more energetic concluding remarks.
